Madonna did not disappoint.

The 53-year-old legend took the biggest stage in the world, the 2012 Super Bowl Halftime Show, and brought the house down. She dressed to impress, sporting a gold headdress, black thigh-high boots, a youthful pleated miniskirt, a black sequined robe and gold cheerleader pom-poms (not all at once, of course).

Even whilst heading up Chanel, Fendi and being an all-round style polymath, Karl Lagerfeld thankfully still manages to find time to burp out some preposterous, inflammatory musings from time-to-time. His inability to self-edit is what makes him such a charmingly nefarious fashion patriarch.

This week, our friends at Bernalwood pointed out an excellent find in the mailbox: the Urban Outfitters Early Spring 2012 Catalogue with San Francisco as its muse.

The catalogue is rife with shots of our fair city, including backdrops of Bernal Heights, the Golden Gate Bridge, Sutro Tower, Land's End and other SF spots.

Tough economic conditions have triggered the "lipstick effect", with a rise in shoppers buying small beauty treats to cheer themselves up, retailers said today.

The John Lewis and Waitrose partnership card has seen a surge in spending on cosmetics, creams and other beauty items in the last three months of 2011.

Analysis of the spending habits of the card's 553,000 customers found that beauty and skin care spending rose by 48% between October and December 2011, compared with the same period in 2010.
